👉🏽Are you really hard on yourself? I know many people who are.

🥀They blame themselves for making mistakes. Some even believe their mistakes are proof of how bad they are as a person.

💥It then becomes a battlefield in their minds. They replay their mistakes over and over, criticizing themselves for what they did, and dreaming about what they could have done instead.

🌟But mistakes are part of being human. We have all made them.

🌱It simply means you’re learning, growing, and navigating life as best you can with the knowledge and understanding you have at the time.

💓The trick is to be compassionate towards yourself. Realize that mistakes aren’t who you are — they’re just something you did.

‼️If being hard on yourself has become a pattern, you don’t have to work through that alone.

✅ Therapy can provide a space to understand where that self-criticism comes from, develop a kinder relationship with yourself, and learn healthier ways of responding when things don’t go as planned.

We are in the blessed days of Dhu’l Hijjah — the best days of the year.

Some have been granted the opportunity to go to Hajj, while most of us remain at home. But we should not allow these magnificent days to pass without striving to become better Muslims and better people.

With the recent events in the world, many of us are carrying sadness and heaviness in our hearts.

You may wonder what you can do to help, to create change, or to make a difference.

There is something each of us can do — individually and collectively — to make the world a better place:

✅ Strive to be someone Allah loves.❤️

Allah Most High tells us in the Qur’an that He loves:

🌟Those who do good (2:195)
🌟Those who repent (2:222)
🌟Those who are pure (2:222)
🌟Those who fear Him (3:76)
🌟Those who are patient (3:146)
🌟Those who rely upon Him (3:159)
🌟Those who act justly (5:42)

Reflect on these qualities and ask yourself:

🔷Which of these am I consistent in?
🔷Which of these am I struggling to fulfill?
🔷Which of these can I strive to embody more?

When you show up as a person Allah loves, others will be impacted by your words, your actions, and your presence.

The first place to begin is within our own homes — with our spouses, children, and families.

These blessed days are a means for forgiveness and mercy. They are also an opportunity for transformation and growth.

Do not let them pass without intending to become better than before.

The aim is clear: be someone Allah loves.

💖 It may be very possible to change your marriage.

❤️‍🩹 I’ve been a marriage counselor for over 10 years, and I’ve witnessed many couples transform their relationships for the better.

👀The problem is that most people focus on the wrong thing.

🙈They put so much energy into trying to change their spouse instead of changing the relationship dynamic.

❌It’s counterproductive to nag, attack, or threaten your spouse, then expect them to show you more love and support. People don’t respond well to that.

✅ Instead, try increasing these things in your marriage — even if it starts with only you:

1. Validate your spouse’s feelings when they complain instead of dismissing them.

2. Increase soft touch and affection, like hugs, holding hands, and sweet kisses.

3. Show more support for the things your spouse does, whether it’s their parenting style or career goals.

4. Schedule daily quality time, even if it’s just 30 minutes, or weekly quality time for a few hours.

5. Be reliable and consistent in what you say and do. Avoid breaking promises or failing to show up when you said you would.

🌟By setting a positive example, inshaAllah your spouse may feel inspired to do the same.

⚡️But Valentine’s Day feels like commercialized love.

The first fight you have with your spouse can be agonizing.

For many people, arguing with their spouse is not what they expected marriage to be like.

They assumed that because they get along so well, they would naturally be able to work through issues with ease.

But marital conflict often brings out another side of us—a side most people never see.

When we feel hurt, disappointed, or angry with our spouses, we may behave in ways that go against how we usually understand ourselves.

As difficult as these moments are, they can become powerful opportunities to learn more about ourselves and to strive to be better.

However, the opposite can also happen. Conflict can become a way to blame our spouses for our painful feelings while avoiding responsibility for our own actions.

“You started it!”

“You kept bringing it up, and that’s why I exploded!”

“This isn’t how I usually am with others. It’s what you said that made me react this way!”

Without proper insight and guidance, this pattern can turn into a painful and recurring cycle over time.

There are solutions—and one of the most important is increasing self-awareness around what triggers your anger, hurt, or frustration.

I give the same advice to singles and engaged couples as well. It is crucial to learn more about yourself before tying the knot and using that knowledge to better yourself.

Does therapy and counseling work for Muslims? 🤔

🎓I recently obtained a Postgraduate Certificate (Level 7) in Psychological Therapies at Queen Mary University of London. AlhamduliLlah, I received a distinction for my grade.

📚My course focused on understanding different types of therapies for mental health issues—their application and their effectiveness.

❓As a Muslim therapist and counselor, my main concern was whether these psychological therapies *really* work for Muslim clients.

📉I was pleased to find several studies involving Muslim populations. However, the research is still limited.

💔That being said, my studies led me to believe that the issue is not the therapy itself—but rather the absence of spirituality in the original framework.

🚫This lack of awareness then filters down into how therapists are trained, and many receive no meaningful training in spiritually sensitive care.

➡️Consequently, therapists may:

❌ avoid discussing Islam
❌ consider faith irrelevant
❌ pathologize religious practices (prayer, hijab, modesty)
❌ misunderstand Islamic values

➡️This can make Muslim clients feel:

👎🏽unseen
👎🏽misunderstood
👎🏽spiritually judged

My solution?
💯Bring faith into the therapy room.

I’m so happy to share that I’ve recently completed the Level 3 Clinical Training in the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy!

Over the course of this intensive training—overseen by the Gottman Institute—I joined more than 45 licensed marriage therapists and mental health counselors in exploring advanced applications of the Gottman Method.

I’ve been incorporating John and Julie Gottman’s approach into my own counseling practice for several years, but this training truly took my understanding to a new level.

Through real case studies, we analyzed complex marriage dynamics and collaborated on how to use the Gottman framework to address specific marital challenges.

I felt so blessed to learn alongside such a bright and motivated group of therapists. Everyone’s insights and questions enriched the experience.

Moving forward, I plan to integrate the Gottman Method even more deeply into my sessions. What makes this approach stand out?

✨ It’s evidence-based. The Gottmans studied thousands of couples over 30 years to identify what makes relationships thrive.

✨ It’s practical. The skills are easy to teach and apply at home—empowering couples to continue the work between sessions.

✨ It’s compatible with Islamic teachings. This is the most meaningful aspect for me.

On this blessed Friday, Alhamdulillah, our Muslima Coaching Instagram account has reached 10K followers.

Although I’m grateful and humbled by this milestone, the number itself means little to me.

Over the past few years, I’ve become increasingly disheartened by what social media has become — the fakeness, algorithm bias, and censorship on issues that truly matter.

In my Islamic counseling and therapy sessions, I’ve also seen the negative impact social media can have. Many clients have opened up about struggles with comparison, jealousy, and low self-esteem.

So, why keep an account? Because of you.

Your journeys are what keep me going.

Through social media, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of my clients and connecting with Muslims from all over the world — and without having to travel!

My desire to help others continues to motivate me to show up, even in a space I often find challenging.
