10 Things Muslim Marriage Counseling Can Do For Your Marriage

10 Things Muslim Marriage Counseling Can Do For Your Marriage

by Naielah Ackbarali

In the Quran, Allah Most High says that one of His greatest signs is He created spouses to live in tranquility with each other. (Quran, 30:21)

Through this verse, we understand that marriage in Islam is meant to be a place of comfort and repose. Muslim couples should find peace and solace in each other’s company.

However, every relationship is different and couples will go through various trials together, which can impact the quality of their bond.

This does not mean that couples should lose hope in their marriage. On the contrary, dedicating themselves to improving their marriage can be an opening for immense reward and tremendous blessings.

I have been a Muslim marriage counselor and coach for over ten years. I am a firm believer that Islamic marriage counseling can help Muslim couples transform their relationship into a loving, tender connection.

Here are ten reasons why you should consider Muslim marriage counseling and coaching!

1. Improve Communication

Couples counseling can help you develop better communication skills. When you are able to openly express your feelings and listen to each other without interrupting, it leads to greater understanding and more love.

2. Learn Conflict Resolution Skills

Marriage counseling can teach effective ways to resolve conflicts. Instead of continuing to butt heads or ignoring each other for days, you will be guided on how to approach disagreements and de-escalate rising tension.

3. Rebuild Lost Trust

When resentment and grudges grow, trust is lost. For couples dealing with trust issues, marriage counseling provides a safe space to address misunderstandings and heal from heartbreak.

4. Establish Connection

Marriage counseling can address emotional or physical intimacy issues by encouraging couples to reconnect and create common relationship goals.

5. Clarify Expectations & Needs

Each person will want something different from the relationship to feel happy. Marriage counseling helps spouses get in touch with what they want, while also providing an outlet to express those desires with each other.

6. Prevent Future Problems

Couples can learn tools and techniques for handling future challenges, in addition to agreeing on personal boundaries and limits.

7. Deal with Major Life Challenges

Marriage counseling can be helpful during significant life transitions, such as having children, moving to a new country, or career changes. Couples counseling guides couples through these adjustments.

8. Live Up to Unfulfilled Responsibilities

Couples counseling can help spouses become more motivated to fulfill their spousal roles and responsibilities by rekindling tender feelings for each other.

9. Follow the Sunna

Islamic marriage counseling reminds spouses of how to be like the Propbet (pbuh) in their everyday interactions. By using kind words, avoiding harsh criticism, practicing patience, and learning forgiveness, spouses draw closer to the sunna.

10. Become Spiritual Partners

Marriage counseling can encourage couples to reconnect spiritually. By forming shared spiritual goals, couples can bond through worshipping Allah together, which will add a deeper meaning to their relationship.
